General Information

Rio de Janeiro is an exuberantly beautiful city with a joyous soul. Rio de Janeiro is an endless parade of attractions, driven by its principal asset, the ‘Cariocas’, as the residents of Rio are known. From the top of Corcovado Mountain, where the Statue of Christ gives his open-armed blessing to the city, one can see the sea, the mountains, the forest and the lake … a truly incomparable setting. One of the richest stretches of Atlantic coastline is trimmed with famous beaches, such as Copacabana and Ipanema, peopled by sun worshippers. The tastes of Rio are everywhere, in the kiosks, bars and restaurants, drenched in sun or glowing in the moonlight. This is Rio, where everyone, from near or far, feels at home in this contagiously effervescent environment.

During colonial times, Salvador was the capital of Brazil. Due to the unevenness of its terrain and for strategic purposes it was built in two levels, a not uncommon occurrence in this country. Salvador is famous for its 365 churches, religious and historical treasures, and also for its beautiful sandy beaches hugging the coast. The African slaves brought their “macumba”(voodoo) rites to Brazil when they landed in Bahia. Even today, the Candomblé cult venerates many different deities. Bahia food is spicy and flavors are rich. Among typical dishes, the suggestions are: vatapá, caruru, xinxim, sarapatel and acarajé. Famous throughout Brazil, Bahia’s “Mercado Modelo”, a covered market place where you can take your pick among ceramic, leather and wood craft. Or,if you prefer, have a choice of hand-make hammocks and embroidered articles.

Breakfast at the hotel

Visit Corcovado & Sugar Loaf – Lunch at Confeitaria Colombo

Departure from the Hotel following to visit the Christ of Redeemer, located in the top of the Corcovado Mountain at a height of 710 meters, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is certainly one of the world’s best-known and most-visited monuments.

This outing begins in the Cosme Velho District, aboard a miniature train that runs through the steep Atlantic Rainforest up to the foot of the statue, offering stunning glimpses of Rio from many different angles. From the top, the view is nothing short of heavenly: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botanical Gardens, the Jockey Club, and the Lagoon. The entire city spreads out in a magnificent panorama during the day, glittering and magic after dark and always protected by Christ the Redeemer, who blesses visitors and residents from on high.

The group will have lunch at Confeitaria Colombo. Founded in 1894, at the heart of Rio, the Confeitaria Colombo is part of the cultural and artistic patrimony of the city and it is a reference as a tourist sight. As a piece of the past that visits the present the Confeitaria Colombo is a typical example of nouveu and belle époque architecture. The giant Belgiun mirrors, the Italian marble and the king wood furniture are witness of more then a century of History and bring the senses and smells from the XIX century to nowadays. The vast menu of the Confeitaria Colombo includes traditional dishes served by the house since it opened. Some recipes were recovered and included again to the menu.

After lunch, depart to Sugar Loaf where you ascend the first mountain – Morro do Urca by cable car, continuing to the second mountain – Pao de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf). It is from these majestic view points that it is easy to see how the early explorers believed that they had sailed into the mouth of a great river when they named Rio de Janeiro – which means River of January, as the city was discovered on the 1st of January 1502. They had mistaken Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a great river. Undoubtedly the most famous landmark of Guanabara Bay, this solid granite and quartz prominence rises 396m high above the sea and derived its name from the mountains shape – which resembles conical clay molds used earlier to refine sugar.
